At Drive Protected, we're committed to showing the unfiltered reality of PPF installs, especially on heavy-duty trucks where contours push film to its limits. This video features Eric applying full Defense+ Clear PPF to the rear dual fender (box side) of a 2026 Ford F-350 Dually. Using tips from a viewer comment, he refines the approach from a previous partial install, focusing on tension management for better results.

Watch the hands-on process, challenges, and pro techniques:

Why Full Fender PPF on a Dually?

These trucks see serious abuse! From rocks, gravel, salt, and debris in wheel wells. Full PPF protects the factory paint, self-heals minor scratches, and keeps resale value high. The rear box sides are notoriously tricky: deep valleys, sharp corners, protruding "fingers," and high built-in tension that can cause lifting or distortion if not handled right.

Key Steps & Techniques

  • Prep & Solutions: Slip assist gel on the panel; slip solution (Johnson's baby shampoo + distilled water, 2 pumps per 32 oz) on the adhesive side for glide; tack solution (hot water + 20% isopropyl) underneath for bonding.
  • Starting Strong: Anchor at the top corner first, stretch downward to reduce overall tension. Tack inner areas, then pull outward.
  • Tension Management: Lift positive tension lines/fingers, spray tack underneath, squeegee at angles to avoid pops. Relief cuts release stubborn valleys, apply full body weight (~330 lbs) for pressure, then stretch and secure.
  • Section Work: Divide into halves; hook around corners, squeegee front-to-back with gel to push out air pockets. Re-tack and work downward on problem spots.
  • Finishing: Overnight cure to check for pulls; final trim and post-heat in the morning. Customer wants zero visible edges or imperfections, protection first, perfection secondary.

"We stretched the limits of our Defense+... it held up quite well."

Light truck color hides stretch marks; darker would show the film's effort more clearly.

Tips from Our Shop

  • Start top-down on tension heavy panels to minimize fights.
  • Relief cuts + heavy pressure + generous tack solution tame valleys and fingers.
  • DIY demands patience, practice on smaller areas; pros still battle these.
  • Defense+ is forgiving and tough, self-healing, high-stretch for demanding jobs like this.
  • Slip Assist Gel makes repositioning easier on big, contoured surfaces.
