At Drive Protected, we believe in showing the real side of PPF installs, not just the easy wins. This short video captures Eric battling a tough bulk application on a 2026 Ford F-350 Dually's rear wheel covers (the updated, smoother design vs. older angular ones). No pre-cut template here, just a sheet of our Defense+ Clear PPF, plus plenty of Slip Assist Gel to fight tension, valleys, and air pockets.

Watch the honest, behind-the-scenes struggle and techniques:

Why This Spot is Challenging

Rear duals on Super Duty trucks are PPF nightmares: deep contours, wheel well openings, built-in film memory creating tension lines, and tight corners that fight back. Eric covers the face from the top body line down just below the edge, wrapping around the box section without extra disassembly. The goal? Durable protection in high-impact areas like wheel wells, where rocks and debris hit hard—especially in Manitoba conditions.

Key Steps & Real Techniques

  • Prep: Clay bar, wash, then isopropyl alcohol + glass towels for clean adhesion (vital near wheel wells).
  • Light Removal: Quick 30-second job—three clips, pull tab on wiring—makes access way easier.
  • Application: Heavy Slip Assist Gel on panel and adhesive; anchor top corner with tack solution, pull and shape around the box. Re-soak as needed, overlap squeegee strokes to push out solution and air.
  • Fighting Tension: Relief cuts for tack access, thumb pressing into valleys, palm squeegeeing—multiple repositionings to tame pop-ups.
  • Trimming: Painter's tape as guide, ULA 35° blades for clean edges. Pro tip: Peel bulk film up and away (not toward wrapped areas) to avoid rips if under-trimmed.

Eric owns it:

"Not my best work... If you're a PPF installer cringing, let me know what you'd do."

Tips from Our Shop Experience

  • Bulk sheets require strong game-planning, anchor points and generous slip/tack solutions prevent dry locks on contours.
  • Relief cuts are smart, not mistakes; they save the install.
  • Defense+ Clear is forgiving yet tough, self-healing and high-performance for DIY or pro use.
  • Removing small parts like lights opens up tough spots without major teardown.
  • Products like our Slip Assist Gel (16 oz bottles) make the difference on stubborn areas.
